Basic Dumplings

This is a great foundation for a simple dumpling. They can be modified to whatever flavor of dish they will be used in and can be cooked in a variety of ways.

Basic Dumplings
Here is a shot of the dumplings just added to my Hungarian Beef Stew with Dumplings recipe. These dumplings puff up a bit when cooking... so don't make them too large.

Makes 6 - 8 depending on size

Ingredients

2 cups King Arthur® All-Purpose Flour
1 tablespoon Bob’s Red Mill® Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon Bob’s Red Mill® Baking Soda
6 tablespoons Land O’Lakes® Unsalted Butter, melted
1 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
Bourbon Barrel Foods® Smoked Salt and Pepper, to taste

Directions

Using a wooden spoon, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Mix in the butter, buttermilk and parsley until well incorporated.

Over low heat, drop the mixture into warm broth in 8 large spoonfuls. Simmer, covered, until the dumplings are firm, about 15 minutes.

Notes

  • We use this base recipe in the Slow Cooker Hungarian Beef Stew. For those dumplings we add 1/2 teaspoon marjoram and 1 tablespoon italian spice blend to the recipe. We also use smoked salt and pepper for seasoning.
  • Instead of cooking in broth, the dumplings can be placed on top of any meal. Just cover the dumplings in any dish with a lid and cook until firm.
